Discography First Anniversary & Flexi Disc Release - 06/22/14 at The Baltimore House

June 17th, 2014

It’s hard to believe that almost a year has passed since the launch of Discography, the vinyl-only DJ event which originally debuted on July 7, 2013 at The Baltimore House, 43 Kling William St, Hamilton!

The purpose of Discography was to create a bi-weekly event to showcase a rotating roster of Hamilton and area DJs that have either worked at or have been directly influenced by Dr. Disc, one of Hamilton’s most established and well known record stores. The only stipulations were that DJs were required to use only vinyl records to play the music that they wanted to play – no laptops or digital formats allowed! – and also that their music sets must contain inventive and surprising songs versus standard, regurgitated top 40 tracks. [To read a CBC Hamilton article about the original Discography launch, click HERE.]

The flexi disc invitation for the Discography First Anniversary taking place at The Baltimore House on Sunday, June 22 at 10:00 pm is impressive! Wikipedia defines a flexi disc as a “phonograph record made of a thin, flexible vinyl sheet with a molded-in spiral stylus groove, and is designed to be playable on a normal phonograph turntable.” In other words, you can put this flexi disc invitation on a turntable and actually LISTEN TO IT! The flexi disc invite contains the Discography theme song, a 3-minute instrumental track written and performed by Andy Inglis, and produced locally by Michael Keire at Threshold Recording Studios.

If you are lucky enough to own a turntable, click HERE to learn how to play the flexi disc invite!

You can also listen to the full “Discography Theme” track online by clicking HERE.

The Discography First Anniversary event is open to the public, but you must have received an physical flexi disc invitation in order to be eligible to attend. (Please also note that having an invitation does NOT guarantee entry due to the venue’s legal capacity – so please get there early to avoid disappointment!) The special flexi disc invitations are extremely limited and are available by contacting Mark Furukawa (email: (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) or Andy Inglis directly (email: (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)). A limited number of flexi disc invites are also available at Dr. Disc, 20 Wilson St, Hamilton.

Discography’s First Anniversary, Flexi-Disc Release and Record Club Launch takes place on Sunday, June 22 starting at 10:00 pm at The Baltimore House, 43 King William Street, Hamilton (to access the Facebook Event page click HERE). Not only will there be back-to-back, vinyl-only DJ sets by event creators Mark Furukawa and Andy Inglis, but there will also be:

- Promotional giveaways by Pistonhead Kustom Lager
- Pop-up shops, including Dr. Disc and O’s Clothes
- Amazing Peruvian food by Chef Juan from Culantro Restaurant
- Information about the Discography Record Launch which will feature exclusive, seasonal releases by prominent local music artists released on flexi disc format!

Rescheduled Date! Author Geoff Pevere to sign new teenage head book Saturday, June 7 at 2:00 pm

June 6th, 2014

Dr. Disc is very proud to announce that the book signing featuring Geoff Pevere, one of Canada’s leading pop culture commentators and movie critics, has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 7, between 2:00 and 4:00 PM. Geoff will be here signing his new book, Gods of the Hammer (Coach House Books), which is about Hamilton’s punk rock legends Teenage Head!

Gord Lewis (Teenage Head) will also make a special in-store appearance so make sure not to miss this celebration of Hamilton’s most legendary punk rock band!

=====

About the book:

Once upon a time, Hamilton let some amazing noise loose in the world.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, no Canadian band rocked harder, louder or to more hardcore fans than Hamilton, Ontario’s own Teenage Head. Although usually lumped in the dubiously inevitable ‘punk rock’ category of the day, this high-energy quartet – consisting of four guys who’d known each other since high school – were really only punk by association. In essence they were a full-on, balls-to-the-wall, three-chord, kick-out-the-jams band that obliterated categories and labels with the sheer force of their sonic assault, and everywhere they played they converted the merely curious to the insanely devoted. And they almost became world famous. Almost.

Gods of the Hammer tells their story, in full and for the first time – hit records, broken bones, riots and all – by those who lived to tell the tale.

=====

About the book signing:

Place: Dr. Disc, 20 Wilson St. (at James St.), in the basement
Date: Saturday, June 7
Time: 2:00 to 4:00 PM

=====

About the author:

Geoff Pevere is one of Canada’s leading pop culture commentators and movie critics. The former host of CBC Radio’s groundbreaking Prime Time program, he is also the co-author of the national bestseller Mondo Canuck: A Canadian Pop Culture Odyssey. Currently a movie columnist with the Globe and Mail, he was a movie critic with the Toronto Star for ten years, a TV host with TVOntario and Rogers Television and a lecturer on film and media. His other books include Toronto on Film and Donald Shebib’s Goin’ Down the Road.
